ASUS R510J Review: An Entry-Level Gaming Laptop Worth Buying?

When it comes to gaming laptops in India, the options are not much varied. Also, the existing range of gaming laptops is overpriced, which goes beyond the budget of an average Indian consumer. ASUS, which has been consistently coming up with its new range of laptops bundled with latest features has introduced ASUS R510J - An entry level Budget Gaming Laptop. We got to test the review unit for a period of 2 weeks and here I share my personal, and honest review about this gaming notebook.

Design and Build

ASUS has been projecting R510J model as a replacement for desktop and the 15.6-inch widescreen HD display clearly gives it a large dimension appropriate for gaming. I found it good both for multimedia as well as general usage. It has a full-fledged keyboard with Numpad coupled with sufficient space for wrist support.

The exterior has a piano finish which looks awesome but is susceptible to scratches and can act as a fingerprint magnet, a cover is recommended. The matte-finish of the interiors gives it a scope for rough usage which is expected from a gaming laptop. The red geometric lines which start from the top shell and continues into the interior gives a really cool gaming look. Even the screen has a matte finish with anti-glare technology giving less strain to your eyes.Viewing angles are perfectly fine.

It has almost all the possible connectivity slots and is aesthetically designed. One of the drawbacks is that the keyboard  does not have a backlight which should have definitely been there. Overall, this gaming notebook looks classy, cool and has a sturdy build for rough usage.

Features and Specifications

The specs of the Asus-R510J are pretty decent as enlisted below:

It has a dimension of  25.1 x 38 x 3.2 cm and weighs around 2.4kg. The screen is 15.6 inches wide with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

It is powered by the Intel Core i7 4720HQ quad-core processor at 2.6 GHz and can go up to 3.66 GHz in turbo mode. It comes with 8GB DDR3L RAM and  1 TB hard disk. The NVIDIA GeForce 950M GPU of 2 GB may not be an exorbitant feature but certainly capable enough to play almost all modern day games at moderate settings.

It has 1 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0 ports. Apart from this, it has slots for VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, Headphones / Microphone. It also has sonic master speakers and an optical DVD drive. The webcam with 640 x 480 pixels resolution is certainly not great but is decent enough. It comes with an out of the box Windows-10 (64 bit) operating system and a load of other inbuilt apps, and free subscriptions.

Performance

The laptop gives a seamless performance while running various multimedia applications and can run 4k videos flawlessly. It does have some heating issues and it would be preferable to keep it over a table while playing games. The battery life is not that great but ASUS itself is portraying this as a desktop replacement so I cannot nag about it. Anyways, gaming laptops are never said to have exceptional battery life.

The audio isn't as loud as we had expected, though it comes with SonicMaster sound enhancements, the audio levels, especially during Gaming failed to impress us. It clocked 2809 in 3DMark Fire Strike which is not an exceptional score but it clearly indicates that the R510J is gaming ready. You can expect to run most modern games at a respectable 30fps to 40fps using medium or high settings and if you have mastered the art of tweaking you can surely go up to 60fps. I believe, it would fare a lot better in the games prior to 2015.

Final Verdict

The price tag of Rs 69,900/- may not seem to be low  but considering the higher prices of other gaming laptops, you can definitely go for this one and get your hands on some serious gaming even under a tight budget. Overall, the designs, specifications, and performance of this gaming laptop have been satisfactory in my two weeks of usage and I can recommend this to you as well.

Happy Gaming!
