5 most popular Dancers of all time from India

In India dancing is synonymous with “expression”. Dancing is a type of art that involves the movement of the body, often rhythmic and to music. From ballet to contemporary, hip-hop to salsa, dance is certainly enjoying something of a renaissance lately. Many Indians choose dance as their career and also succeed. Not only succeed but now they are well-known dancers all over the world.

Let see some of the famous Indian dancers of the time known for their different style of dance forms.


1. Remo D’Souza 

His birth name is Ramesh Gopi Nair, an Indian dancer as well as Choreographer and Director. He has judged various Indian television shows including Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Dance+. He has been honoured by various awards, to mention few like Zee Cine Awards, IIFA awards, and Screen Awards. Along with dancing, he has also known for his direction in Bollywood movies like F.A.L.T.U and ABCD series.


2. Madhuri Dixit

She is a trained classical dancer and one of the leading actresses of Bollywood. She is the most graceful dancer.

She has the ability to control minds by her moves and expressions.

She is “the dancing queen”. Her well-known works include Maar Dala from Devdas. She has also judged the dance show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa”.



3. Birju Maharaj

He started teaching the dance form at the young age of thirteen. He was born on 4 February 1938 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

He was a master in “Kalka-Bindadingharana of kathak style dancing. His various achievements include National Film Award, Film Fare Award, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for kathak in 1964. He is the founder of the dance school in Delhi named Kalashram.



4. Terence Lewis

Terence is a famous Indian dancer and choreographer born on 10 April 1975 in Mumbai.

He is trained in Indian folk, contemporary and non-classical dance forms. He was one of the first Indian choreographers who broke into the international dancing scene.

He trained in Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary at Alvin Ailey American dance theatre. His first choreographic song was titled 'Waltz For A Romance' in the movie “Lagaan”.

Along with his dancing skill, he is a daredevil too and has performed in the Indian version of 'Fear Factor'. He also holds the Guinness world record for choreographing 1336 people together in a song.



5. Sonal Mansingh

Sonal Mansingh is an eminent Indian classical dancer and choreographer renowned for her Odissi dancing style. She was born on 30 April 1944 in Mumbai.

When she was 18 she travelled to Bangalore to learn Bharatnatyam from prof. U.S. Krishna Rao. She started her dancing career in 1962. In the 1970s she performed to the poems Mary Magdalene and Sanyasi Upagupta.

Her renowned works include Indradhanush, Sabras, Mera Bharat and much more. She was honoured by Rajiv Gandhi Excellence award, Padma Vibhushan in 2003, Kalidas Samman and much more. In 2002 Prakash Jha made a documentary film on her titled ‘Sonal’ and the movie won the National Film Award that year.
