UP Elections 2017: Let the agenda be Development

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election is to be held in 2017. The dates have not been announced yet. The elections should take place by January 2017. The last election was held in the year 2012 with the Samajwadi Party forming the government under the leadership of Shri Akhilesh Yadav. The term of the current government will come to an end by May 2017. With the elections coming forth one can visualize the fight that is going on among all the contesting parties. The seventh and the last cabinet expansion were held during the month of June 2016 under the leadership of Shri Akhilesh Yadav.

For the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, 2017, the condition of law and order will form the major election issue. The Samajwadi Party has released the first candidate list on 28 March 2016 that consists of 142 contestants for the coming election. Out of the entire candidate list, 85 candidates have been replaced who all had contested the 2012 elections. The candidate list consists of 11 Brahmins, 14 OBC's , 15 Thakurs, 18 Yadavs, 23 Scheduled castes, 28 Muslims and 6 from Gujar, Kurmi and Jat communities. The list is comprehensive and contains representatives from various sections of the society.

The 2017 election is going to be a tough fight as all the opposition parties want to establish their base in Uttar Pradesh. But, the Samajwadi Party has a very strong leadership within the state which the BJP and BSP do not have. Also, it is a much-unexpected scenario to see Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav to be contesting the elections together. Although previously, the election-results forecasting was usually done on the basis of caste-based votes, it is commendable that Akhilesh Yadav wants to keep the focus on development.

This year for the assembly elections 2017, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to join active politics. She is to become the face of the Congress in 2017 polls. It is a very major step for Priyanka Gandhi because not before this has she campaigned outside Rae Barelli and Amethi. Somewhere in mid-July, Rahul Gandhi will present her sister Priyanka Gandhi as the face of the campaign.

Recently, the BJP’s Kairana conspiracy has been exposed. The BJP leaders on 12th June 2016 had accused the UP government of alleging Kairana for anti-Hindu activities. The news became viral on social media platforms and it acted as a black day for the entire UP state. A BJP MP, Hukum Singh generated a list of 346 Hindus who left the district due to the increased threat activities by a particular caste. The UP government did not comment anything regarding this without gathering sufficient proof and information.

Finally, when the list that had been issued by BJP was looked into by the Uttar Pradesh Police, it was found that the list was fake. Many families whose names had been mentioned in the list had migrated 15-20 years back for better education and employment opportunities. The entire incident was BJP’s pre-election conspiracy. The BJP thought that raising these communal issues would help them get votes in the upcoming election. Amit Shah and Hukum Singh have been framed for this conspiracy. It is the efforts of Uttar Pradesh government that has always tried to maintain peace and communal harmony within the state. It is surprising that the BJP government which fought on the agenda of Development in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections is now shifting the focus to communal issues.

Under the current regime of Akhilesh Yadav, the government mainly focuses on the development agenda. The main aim of the present government is development along with generating the employment opportunities. There have been various remarkable feats attained by the current SP government. The Agra-Lucknow Expressway is expected to be open to the public from the month of October 2016. The Purvanchal Samajwadi Expressway is also under progress. The current government aims at achieving huge success and developmental rates for Uttar Pradesh ranging from roadways to metros. The government wants to establish metro connectivity in cities like Kanpur and Varanasi. For the purpose of dairy development, the government is working on the Kamdhenu projects. It is due to the strenuous efforts of the present government that UP ranks as one of the largest milk producing states.

It is because of these developmental activities, many opposition parties are unable to fight in the name of development. As far as the efforts of the present government are concerned, Akhilesh Yadav has put in many efforts to bring in an all round development within the state. In the upcoming elections, it will be a tough fight between all the contesting parties. It all depends on the citizens of UP whether they want to go back to the old days of caste based politics or usher in a new era of development under Akhilesh Yadav.
