Bollywood: The 100 crore Fallacy

Bollywood is one of the largest producers of movies all over the world. With around three to four movies releasing at the box office, every Friday, the competition is fierce. A good way, as many of us believe it to measure the worth of a movie by its commercial success. However, what is altogether very surprising is that a lot of the Indian movies today are making it to the famous 100-crore club, despite lacking a story line, let alone a good one. So here, let us have a look at a few such stories.

Grand Masti

Well, this movie makes it to the top of the list because it is a sheer example of how senseless people could be, to go into theaters and wasting their money on a movie that does not only lack a story but is downright cheap and vulgar. Yes, those are the words for it. The only thing that the makers have tried to do is to add some spicy content through objectification and misogyny, and ironically, the educated people who talk about issues such as women empowerment enjoyed it with popcorn and cold drinks.

Happy New Year

The only reason why people went into this was because of Mr Shah Rukh Khan. But again, just like most of his movies lately, this movie too lacks both sense and plot, with the actress, in this case, Deepika Padukone being taken only to flaunt skin and show dance moves. In spite of it being a multi-starrer movie, with some great actors, everyone who went to watch it returned disappointed, or rather irritated.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

This list will sure remain incomplete without mentioning this movie. As Director Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan came together to recreate their old magic, what they forgot was that the audience today has changed. What came from this reunion was a movie that can be called a combination of all the hits of the 90s, with a song every ten minutes or so. Honestly, however, people could have enjoyed the same drama in a television daily soap, and it won't make much difference.

Dhoom 3

Our favorite actor of all times, Mr Aamir Khan, surprised everyone as he came up with a movie like this, primarily because people expect some substance, at least from his movies. Based on the old double- role strategy, the movie has every element to boring you, just in the right amount. As the whole movie revolves around the lead actors, Katrina Kaif appears for around 20 minutes, mostly in dance sequences. The scenes are unnecessarily exaggerated, and it is difficult for a person to watch them, while he is in his perfect senses.

Housefull 3

The latest addition to the list, I wonder why the makers have an idea to ruin a franchise name, by adding unnecessary sequels to it. After Housefull and Housefull 2, they come up with a comedy like this, where the actors do not actually know what they are doing, the jokes are absolutely meaningless, the actresses are like barbie dolls put up for display, and the plot is missing. The movie was a disaster, and yet it managed to earn around 109 crores, and the reason, is far beyond anyone’s understanding.

It is therefore high time that we actually start making and watching movies that have some basic idea attached to it, rather than the ones like above, which does no good, except wasting both time and money of the audience.
