Pink: The Dark Shade of Life

Shoojit Sircar never fails to surprise his audience. His movies, which in the past include the likes of ‘Piku’ and ‘Madras Cafe’, always seem to attract the people, usually because of their different subjects and out of the box ideas. The recent addition to the list of his works is the upcoming movie Pink, scheduled to release on 16 September 2016.

The trailer of the movie is as surprising as is its title. It is rather ironical that despite, the title suggesting qualities like tenderness and femininity, the movie looks more of a dark, conceited story of complex characters. Deciphering the plot of the movie is a really difficult part, as the makers have made all the efforts to keep it under wraps, and not even the two-minute long trailer video gives us much hint regarding what the story is about.

However, what we know the best that it is a story of three strong female protagonists, played by actresses Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and newcomer Andrea Tariang, who play young women residing in South Delhi, who are accused of harassing a man, while they insist that they themselves are the ones who have been wronged. The Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan plays a lawyer who is fighting the case in their support, while everyone else is against them.

The overall idea looks convincing because it is a story that can be seen in our real lives. With the continuous ongoing debate between women empowerment and women abusing their rights, there could not have been a better time for a movie like this.

There a lot of surprising things in the trailer, for example, the use of uncensored language by the senior actor, which many of us are not accustomed to. There have been a lot of doubts regarding the content and the viewership of the movie, which was given a U/A certificate by the censor board, which have been clarified by the makers as well as the actors. The movie does not preach or lecture someone but merely attempts to show the public a mirror of what is happening around us.

With the buzz and media reports and statements calling it to be another ‘female dominated’ Bollywood movie, the lead actor, Angad Bedi, disagreed when he recently stated that it is more of a youth-centric movie, where every character has an equal importance. He also said that it was important that no images were formed about the protagonist or the antagonists because that is not the way in which the story is written.

In an attempt to make the characters real, everyone has a shade of grey, and a dark side, which they attempt to conceal.



On an on, the fact remains that like his other movies, Shoojit is once again coming up with a story that will make the audience sit back and think about how the life around us is going. Also, Amitabh Bachchan’s role in the whole plot is especially something many people are looking forward to.

We can just hope that the movie on a whole unfolds to be as promising as its trailer.
