Swachhta Abhiyaan: Cleaning of What?

“Change has to come! Change is necessary, and for our society it is inevitable.”

We are Indians! We are the people of such a democratic country where the voice of ‘common people’ (as the term is used frequently) is still heard. We are proud of our nation for  having an incessant number of excellences and resources (natural as well as human), may it be academic, military, geography, cultures, cross cultures, diversity in various fields, artistic and scientific innovations, great scholars (from the Vedic era), etc. This lovely subcontinent is the hub for tourists across the globe irrespective of race, religion, nation. We are regarded as precious for being humble and cultural. All these things are not new for us. But, still, these should be reminded time to time as we have possessed a habit of ignoring and trivializing our own thought-process.

“Due to real- life competitions (both healthy and unhealthy) in today’s global world we are compelled to run with the passing of every second. We are always in the rush, we have little time for the rest of the human-folk.”—yes, this is true! Most of us do agree with this line without any doubt. From kids to the aged, all are engaged in a hectic schedule, and we indeed have to. But, here the question arises in the minds of the conscious people . Do these things have any relation to the title of this article, i.e., “Swachhta”? It may be or may not be depending upon our thought- process and outlook.

As common people of this democratic country, we always have problems with the “system” that tries to assist in the maintenance of the society as well as of the nation. But, the question is, “By only raising such points and issues in any domain help us?” Such things strike the mind every time. If this sort of question pinches us, we should be glad because we still have the positive attitude of contemplating about our own problems.

Making policies and putting effort to implementing them by the authority do not help always. Such things are imposed (either directly or indirectly) rather than being embraced. One of the major policies and missions that have been adopted by the government in recent years is the “Swachhta Abhiyaan” - the mission of cleaning our own country. We all have enough knowledge about it. We are happy and satisfied for such an initiative. It has become a popular tag and term among the people. At the same time the mission is going well, seemingly becoming a success for the government and also for us. But, the harsh reality and tragic irony are also known to us. In our country, this kind of tradition is also there that we embrace things quickly and soon the original essence and vibration of those things remain silent with the passage of time. As a result, our dream remains a dream only.

Since after the implementation of the “Swachhta Abhiyan”, various pages of news papers, magazines, and websites are well captured bearing the news and photos of people from various organizations and institutions engaging themselves in accomplishing the mission. But, the fact is that this has become a trend now. The real change will come if we dare to change our mindset, our outlook, our negative and bizarre attitude. We are making ourselves busy to such an extent that we do not have time to contemplate about matters which will help us and our fellow as well as next generations. It is always said that “if there is a will, there is a way”.

Nothing will change and nothing can be changed until and unless we realize the value of our own words and thoughts. So, it will be far better if we effort to be practical in the real sense. It is not about cleaning our surrounding only. It should be taken as the mission of cleaning our own thoughts and insights. A healthy, hygienic and fresh mind can exist in clean body and society, and vice versa. If we are clean, we can expect others to be clean. Change is in our hand only. We cannot afford to lose the pride of our nation because of such issues. Let’s make our future generations develop healthy minds, thoughts, and optimism inside them.
