Elon Musk's plan on Mars civilization

Elon Musk (founder, CEO, and CTO of SpaceX) outlined his plan on Mars civilization on 27 September. He wishes to launch the first ship to Mars as soon as 2022!

That's sooner than NASA!

Elon has no other purpose but to make Mars seem possible. He says either we become an 'interplanetary species' or eventually face an 'inevitable extinction event'. To get to Mars, he will be using a reusable rocket which can be reused up to 1000 times!

Here's how the first ship would look like- it would use Falcon 9 as it's rocket (reusable). This rocket would return to earth after detaching from the ship. The booster along with the module on top of it would be nearly as long as two Boeing 747 aircrafts.

The ship will a have a total of 100 passengers for its first trip. For the ticket price tag, he said-"If we can get the cost of moving to Mars to be the same price as a median-priced house in the US of about $250,000 then I think the probability of establishing a civilisation would be relatively high." Elon plans to name his ship Heart Of Gold- a tribute to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Red Dragon

The Falcon heavy rocket powered beast was also unleashed on the occasion. The primary objective of the capsule is to test techniques and technology to enter the Martian atmosphere.

SpaceX estimates to spend a whopping $300 million.

The financial dilemma

The only thorn on the way funds. Elon did propose two sources of cash- deploying cargo and astronauts to the international space station and launching satellites. When asked upon funding-" The reason I am personally accruing assets is to fund this. I really have no other purpose than to make life interplanetary."

Let's hope Elon succeeds in making us the first interplanetary species.
