Powerful Indian Women: Influencing The Modern India

In the past few decades, there have been a lot of Indian Women who have achieved great success in their respective careers and now, they stand as an inspiration for all the young Indian girls. Let us take a look at some of the most prominent personalities who have re-defined the definition of achievement:

Arundhati Bhattacharya (Chairperson of SBI)

Born on - 18 March 1956
Joined SBI - 1977

She is an Indian banker. She is the first woman to be the Chairperson of State Bank of India.

In 2016, she was listed as the 25th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

She was born in Kolkata and spent her childhood in Bhilai. She studied English Literature at Calcutta’s Lady Brabourne College and then at Jadavpur University.

Her husband is an ex-professor of IIT Kharagpur. She was named the 4th most powerful women in Asia Pacific by Fortune.



Chanda Kochhar (MD and CEO of ICICI Bank)

Born on-17 November 1961
Joined ICICI- 1984

She is widely recognized for her role in shaping retail banking in India.

She was born in Jodhpur and raised in Jaipur ,then moved to Mumbai. She joined Jai Hind College for a bachelor's degree and later acquired a master's degree in management studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.

She received the Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies as well as the J. N. Bose Gold Medal in Cost Accountancy.

Although she achieved many milestones and honour but the most recent is she ranked 40th on India Today’s ‘High and Mighty Power List 2016’ in 2016 and was on the 22nd position in the Forbes Asia’s ‘50 Power Businesswomen List 2016’.



Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (Chairman and MD of Biocon)

Born on-23 March 1953
Founded Biocon- 1978

She is an Indian entrepreneur. Biocon is a biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India and the current chairperson of IIM-Bangalore.

In 2014, she was awarded the Othmer Gold Medal, for outstanding contributions to the progress of science and chemistry.

At present in 2016, she has been listed one more time in "Forbes" - the most powerful woman in the world at 77th position. She was born in Bangalore, India.She went to school at Bangalore’s Bishop Cotton Girl's High School, graduating in 1968. She then attended Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, a women's college offering pre-university courses as an affiliate of Bangalore University. She studied biology and zoology, graduating from Bangalore University with a B.Sc. in Zoology in 1973.

Mazumdar hoped to go to medical school, but did not obtain a scholarship. In 1974 she was the only woman enrolled in the brewing course, and the top of her class.She earned the degree of Master Brewer in 1975.



Shobhana Bhartia (Chairperson and Editorial Director of HT Media Ltd.)

Born on-1957
Joined on -1986

She is the daughter of the industrialist KK Birla and also industrialist and Congress party loyalist.

She grew up in Kolkata and had her schooling at Loreto House.She is a graduate of Calcutta University.

She was the first woman chief executive of a national newspaper and probably one of the youngest.

She is considered to be one of the motive forces behind the transformation of the Hindustan Times "into a bright, young paper." She looks after editorial as well as financial aspects.She introduced "The Child Marriage (Abolition) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2006".
