Westernization Of Indian Fashion In 21st Century

Let us go back to the era where India was colonized by the British. It not only had a major impact on the thought pattern, but also the way people started seeing the fashion. With 28 states, 7 union territories, and multiple dialects, India is a land of great diversity and each state has its own unique fashion wherein the conventional Indian dresses like sarees, salwar kameez have undergone dramatic changes.

Thanks to 1990s which introduced us to the global fashion trends! 70 years back, who thought that a saree can be wore with a strappy blouse! The talk of the town will be a Desi Girl wearing an iconic dull colored saree with a bikini blouse. With all of these changes happening in the fashion industry and an evolution in the industry, Indian fashion has been continually improving to perfection. India is a melting pot of multi-ethnic groups with the open-minded culture coupled with cultural diversities. Not to forget, the extensive scale of globalization and liberalization also pose a great impact on the Indian fashion industry. Imports from the west have acted as a catalyst making it easier for Indians to keep a track on the latest fashion outside the country.

Let’s talk about some current fashion trends that have been creating a stir in the fashion industry! Earlier, kurtis were worn along with chudidars, but today wearing them over jeans is the latest fashion. Anushka Sharma in Ae Dil Hai Mushkillooked ravishing wearing red colored long kurta over a light blue, ripped jeans. One can see the west meets east look in the outfits designed by name such asSabyasachi Mukherjee, to name few. A lehenga with an overcoat or a jacket is a hot seller in the market when it comes to indian function sensibilities.Bohemian styling with pantalooni outfits and messy hair-does is the new chiz! Indian cinema has been a major player in westernizing the fashion. Over years, fashion has evolved from the Madhubala's Anarkali-look with kurtas and churidars in Mughal-e-Azam (1960), to Rani Mukherji's short kurti-suits in Bunty Aur Babli (2005), to the iconic sari in films like Chandni (1989) with Sridevi, Main Hoon Naa (2004) with Sushmita Sen, which became fashion trends.

Just want to give a special mention to a revolutionary piece of outfit, Denims! Denim Jeans have undergone a major change in past few years. At that time, would Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss have thought about jeans becoming such a rage among the people! A piece of outfit, very sturdy, that was designed to withstand the hard work, soon became the talk of the town.

Apparently, Indian fashion industry is also appealing to western buyers. Needless to say, the fashion fraternity in India have willingly adopted western designs keeping in mind both the Indian and western sensibilities. However, we have started to embrace western fashion industry to such an extent that we like to adapt the social, cultural changes and western lifestyle.
