So, a couple of days ago, I was reading a book, absorbed into the story and completely unaware about the happenings around me. I was suddenly pulled back to the reality by a girl, who came up to me and asked, “Which book is that?” Well, this is a normal experience, especially if you read as much as I do, but what followed through warmed my heart. I told her that I was reading “Chasing Fire” by Nora Roberts, and she said, “It has been a very long time since I saw someone with a sense good enough to read and appreciate Nora Roberts” and I couldn’t agree more. You might be thinking- what does this have to do with me? Well, that statement made me realize that there are not enough people in the world who appreciate the magic that Nora Roberts spins through her stories. And this might simply be because not many people are aware about who she is or what she writes in the first place. So, come disciples, as I take you forth into the magic personified that is Nora Roberts.
So, the first thing that you would come to know about her ( if you were to google her) is that her novels are categorized into the romance genre. But before all you commitment and sentimental extravagances haters just close this page (and throw away that tiny chance of you reading a Nora Roberts books), let me tell you that these romances with not be like those cliche romances that you so hate. Yes, there are heroes and heroines. And yes, they do fall in love. But her plots are never simply predictable and neither is her characterization idealistic. What makes her characters so adorable is the fact that they are both strong yet flawed at the same time, lending them a very humane image. Her heroines aren’t damsels in distress, they’re strong, independent and have their own lives. They aren’t simply sitting and searching for their knight in shining armour, instead, they’re busy searching for themselves and building their lives. And believe me, marriage is not the sole mission of their lives, no matter what other romance novels lead you to believe. And neither is their love simple, it comes at the cost of heartbreak, rejection, commitment, disgrace and sometimes simple irritation.
Many typical romance novels focus only on the love, but Nora Roberts doesn’t work in the typical standalone manner. The readers get an insight into the characters, their feelings, flaws, challenges, and dreams. The plot is not just about love, Nora Robert’s characters also evolve as through the course of the story. In “Chasing Fire”, for example, the protagonist Rowan Tripp must not only deal with commitment issues and accept her love for Gulliver Curry, but also come to terms with the fact that her mother leaving her father and Rowan isn’t her rejection as a person. Though the focus of the story is on love, it also deals with the theme of trust as an important part of a fire jumper and how they must deal with life when their trust is broken.
So now, I hope you realize Nora Roberts’ true worth. As The Guardian states, “Nora Roberts is probably the most successful novelist you've never heard of”. So now, you probably wouldn’t be shocked when I say that there are more than 400 million Nora Roberts books in print.
Well, now that you’ve gained enlightenment, do not waste any more time. Grab all the Nora Roberts books you can lay hands on and delve into a rollercoaster of thrill, suspense, romance and a little bit of magic. Be warned though, you wouldn’t be able to stop at just one book.
