Why Spending Money on Experiences makes Happy than spending on Things?

We live in a society that is obsessed with consumption. Houses, cars, technology, etc. are the items you are spending you hard earned money on. You are so habituated with these materialistic things that you can’t go anywhere without your personal laptops or cell phones.

But buying a new house, car, iPhone, or even a soft drink from a fast food restaurant might satisfy you momentarily, it will not last long. But experiences, on the other hand, will live on forever.  If you spend money on them, you are going to feel more joy and contentment in your life.

Excitement matters!

The anticipation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while anticipation of obtaining a possession can cause impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning as an excitement undergoes inside our body to experience some of the best things in life. And if talking about purchasing something, the excitement shuts down the moment we have that thing with us.

The Joy of Giving

There are certain possessions that provide a lasting sense of happiness and fulfillment and that include the joy of sharing and joy of giving. There’s much little you can do for yourself which will have the same effect as doing well by someone else. The experience of surprising a friend or a loved one with an unexpected gift will not only make their day, but will leave you satisfied too, and that joy will last unlike your temporary excitement of buying something for yourself. It’ll make you believe that you have achieved something of your own.

Little things mean a lot

Who said size matter in happiness? Those less intense, but still enjoyable evenings out in the company of loved ones will provide a much longer lasting and more fulfilling happiness than the temporary thrill of a large purchase. Adding up tiny bits of happiness and when spreading out, will definitely last a lot longer! Small expenditures of money involving social interactions, get-together or going for an ice-cream are a great way to de-stress, have a great time and create lasting memories.

Experiences teach life lessons

Experiences are worth investing in because they teach you some life lessons and helps in setting up goals that you won’t acquire anywhere else. Like traveling alone to different places teaches patience, acceptance, understanding, and makes you independent. They transform your life in a better way. It helps in teaching how to be humble, virtuous, and compassionate. These lessons might be subtle at first, but they are a big reason why you spend your money on experiences and after which you realize that you not just have spent your money but you have utilized it.

The temporary happiness achieved by buying things only provides puddles of pleasure. In other words, that kind of happiness evaporates quickly and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that linger are what matter most. So go ahead and get some amazing experiences in your lives and live it to the fullest!
