As Helen Keller had said “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
Some people believe that the ability of working with a group of people is more important. For me, in this complicated modern society, being able to work with others is more important.
People are not omnipotent and can’t be experts in all the fields by themselves and hence are likely to need to cooperate with others. For example, without employees from different departments of a company, the project manager can’t bring a new product in the market within the limited time and budget all by himself. If he had employees with him, his work would turn out to be easier and diminished. He would give instructions to his colleagues and get the job done faster. Not only this, he might get efficient ideas from his colleagues which may be fruitful.
Furthermore, team work can improve one’s interpersonal skills. When we work independently, we think and solve problems ourselves and there is no contact with others as well. On the other hand, when we work in a team, we learn how to communicate well with others and also to handle the conflicts which generally arises due to presence of distinct opinions. When it happens, compromise is needed to reach an agreement. What we have learned from our individual experiences is entirely different from our coworkers. Thus, team work also maximizes the shared knowledge in the work places.
Collaborating on a project creates an enthusiasm for learning that solitary work usually lacks. Being able to share discoveries with the rest of our team members excites employees and fosters both individual and team knowledge. Working together lets employees build on the talents of their team mates. While one’s strength may be creative thinking, a coworker may shine in organization and planning.
Often, a team works well together because team members rely on each other to bring individual talents to the table. By observing the process behind these skills, we can learn how to combine our gifts with others and become a stronger team.
Of course, the idea of working independently doesn’t contradict with that of working in a team. Before sharing ideas with peers people need to develop their own opinions independently. Similarly, in a team, members take responsibilities while cooperating with others.
In a nutshell, with rapid social and technology changes, team work will play an important role in the development of the society and the individual as well.
