Happiness Index: What is India's Gross National Happiness?

Happiness, Can u define happiness? Do you really know what is happiness globally?

All those actions, objects which give us satisfaction with our life are Happiness like our family, society, friends etc. So United Nation decided to measure happiness by measuring populated average and make it standard.

The World Happiness Report is a measure of happiness. On April 2, 2012, this was followed by the first UN High Level Meeting on "Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm," which was chaired by Prime Minister Jigme Thinley of Bhutan, the first and so far only country to have officially adopted gross national happiness instead of gross domestic product as their main development indicator.

Data is collected from people in over 150 countries. Each variable measured reveals a populated-weighted average score on a scale running from 0 to 10 that is tracked over time and compared against other countries. These variables currently include- real GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

Each country is also compared against a hypothetical nation called Dystopia. Dystopia represents the lowest national averages for each key variable and is, along with the residual error, used as a regression benchmark.

What are GNH and GDP?

GNH is Gross National Happiness. The Gross National Happiness was an inspirational philosophy, the implementation of a GNH policy was challenging in Bhutan due to the political transformation of the country and the overemphasis on the spiritual and cultural aspects of GNH over economic development. An attempt to measure through psychological and physiological means, a country's happiness, as a direct reference to GDP (Gross Domestic Product). GNH is a global indicator of progress, which measures both sustainable economy and social development while protecting the environment and culture.

GDP is Gross Domestic Product. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the broadest quantitative measure of a nation's total economic activity. More specifically, GDP represents the monetary value of all goods and services produced within a nation's geographic borders over a specified period of time.GDP per capita is a measure of average income per person in a country. In this list, US is at top and India is at 7th position.

According to the latest report of 2016, Denmark is at the top with a score of 7.526 .

The top 10 ranks are as follows-

7. Netherlands (7.339)
8. New Zealand (7.334)
9. Australia (7.313)

In this list, India holds a very bad ranking which is even below Pakistan and Srilanka. The US is at 13th position, Pakistan holds the 92nd rank while Srilanka is at 117. While India stands at 118th position in this list. After this report, we must take care about our Gross National Happiness along with a strongly growing economy. The Government should take proper measures to make our GNH better.
