Is Too Much Coffee Bad For You?

My friend has an addictive edge towards coffee which drives out people insane. Its regular routine for her to hear comments like “So much Coffee, Are you Insane?”, “You will clog your arteries.” Or “You have coffee instead of blood in your veins”. But for her it’s a sweet elixir that keeps her going on or so she says, which made me think of, is there a thing as too much coffee.

The topic of coffee is quite controversial and brings out poles apart reactions from people. For some, it is an amazing beverage while for others an addictive poison.

Coffee is something that has become an imminent part of our life. It helps us out in pulling in an overnighter to study or the lack of sleep in the night; it is an essential morning after routine to transform us from zombies to decent human beings. Coffee contains caffeine, a stimulus, and antioxidants that fires up our body cells which make our mornings and our, oh so boring and monotonous work routine something bearable (Or when it is so).

The foremost important thing is how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee, as it is an active ingredient of it. Caffeine is a psychoactive substance which is most commonly used in the world. A cup of coffee usually varies from 50 to 400+ mg per cup, depending upon its size and source. It’s been suggested that 4 cups of coffee are particularly safe for most healthy adults.

There are various short term health effects of coffee which are quite common symptoms of having too much coffee:
  • It creates a restless in our body as a result of too much caffeine in our body system.
  • You can suffer from anxiety which is an unpleasant state of mental uneasiness and nervousness.
  • Dizziness
  • Too much coffee upsets your stomach which often leads to a sour mood.
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia as in unrest inability to sleep.
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Tremors such as uncontrollable shaking due to muscle contractions.

The ingestion of too much coffee as in caffeine can cause various symptoms which are mostly related to the digestive system and brain, specifically.

Coffee doesn’t have only bad effects; it offers certain advantages also that have been proved by studies which have mixed evidence, if not completely positive-
  • It been revealed that coffee drinkers live longer than non-coffee drinkers with the intake of 4-5 cups per day.
  • Coffee drinkers also have a lower risk of some diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson along with depression and slightly elevating the risk of high blood pressure.
The coffee consumption in itself doesn’t reduce the risk of disease; rather the coffee drinkers are less likely to get the disease.

The symptoms, as well as the positive effects of coffee, are different for different people which also takes into consideration the medical history of a person. But all in all, it’s been suggested that the optimal choice is 4-5 coffees per day for a healthy individual.
